TAFE in Brisbane
Brisbane City Council is conserving bushland through the managing
of employee training
In December 2008 employees from Brisbane City Council completed their Recognition for Prior Learning process. The (14) employees from the areas of Local Assess Services and Operations within Brisbane City Council received their qualification in Certificate III Conservation and Land Management.
The program involved Brisbane City Council Management and Brisbane North Institute of TAFE teaching staff to work closely together to develop an extensive RPL assessment process:*
- Identifying current competencies
- Understanding training needs
- Interpreting common competencies
The program required students to attend the Grovely campus for two single day workshops delivered by Lead Vocational Teacher, Faculty of Environment, David Roberts.
The program was conducted over a six month period and this gave employees the time to assemble additional evidence to demonstrate their common competencies.
This benefited one employee in particular, giving him time to act in a role that provided the skills and experience necessary to obtain Recognition for Prior
Learning.
These Brisbane City Council employees were offered this program as part of their ongoing Planning for Success process. This training develops the employee's skill base and supports other work related training, providing Brisbane City Council with a specialised workforce.
Brisbane North Institute of TAFE based this program on old format, but through employer and employee consultation the process and delivery methods are continually revaluated to design more efficient models that meet the needs of both the employer and employee.
